New Patient Appointments
Your first consultation with Dr Ben McGrath will take place at The Orthopaedic Clinic in The Junction. Please aim to arrive 5–10 minutes early to complete the new patient health questionnaire, or you can fill it out online in advance (see online form below).
For your appointment, please bring with you:
- A referral from your GP or specialist.
- Medicare card, private health insurance details, DVA card, or pension card.
- Any relevant reports, X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.
- A list of your current medications.
- If you have had surgery elsewhere, a copy of your operation report.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the affected area.
During your consultation, Dr McGrath will conduct a thorough examination and provide tailored treatment options based on a detailed assessment of your condition.

Returning Patient Appointments
For your follow-up appointment with Dr Ben McGrath, please bring:
- Any new referrals (a new referral may be needed if your previous one has expired).
- Updated medical records and a current list of medications. Dr McGrath will review your progress, perform any necessary examinations, and update your treatment plan as required.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to the area being examined, and feel free to bring any questions or concerns you’d like to address during your appointment.

Remote And Telehealth Appointments
Dr Ben McGrath provides flexible consultation options for patients outside the Newcastle area or those requiring remote care. If you’re travelling from interstate, we can help coordinate your appointments to suit your schedule, ensuring a seamless experience. For patients unable to attend in person, Dr McGrath offers telehealth consultations, giving you access to expert advice and care from the comfort of your home (follow-up appointments only).
During your telehealth appointment, Dr McGrath will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and create a personalised treatment plan, just as if you were visiting in the clinic.
For telehealth appointments, you’ll need:
- A computer, smartphone, or tablet with a reliable internet connection, webcam, and microphone
- Access to Skype or Zoom (setup instructions available if needed)

Consultation Fees & Payment Information
Face-to-face consultations with Dr Ben McGrath attract a fee, a portion of which is reimbursed by Medicare. Our team will process your Medicare claim at the time of your consultation, and the rebate will be deposited directly into your bank account.
Dr McGrath’s consultation fees* are:
- New consultation fee: $320 (Pensioners $280)
- Review consultation fee: $140
For patients without private health insurance, self-funding options for surgical procedures are available. During your consultation, Dr McGrath will provide a detailed breakdown of any associated costs, empowering you to make informed decisions about your treatment.
