The Day of Your Surgery

Everything You Need to Know for a Smooth Surgical Experience

On the day of your surgery, you will be admitted to the hospital with all necessary pre-surgery protocols in place. Most patients are admitted on the same day as their surgery, ensuring a smooth transition into the procedure. Dr McGrath and his team are here to guide you through every step, ensuring you feel supported and ready for your procedure.

Preparing For Your Hospital Stay

Fasting Requirements: Fasting before your surgery is essential for your safety. You must stop eating solid foods at least six hours before your scheduled procedure. This reduces the risk of complications during anaesthesia.

Morning Surgery: Stop eating solid food from midnight.

Afternoon Surgery: Stop eating solid food from 7 am.

You may drink small amounts of clear fluids, such as water, up until two hours before your admission time unless otherwise instructed.

Medications: Take any medications you’ve been advised to continue with a small sip of water. Bring a list of your current medications, including dosages.

Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove and won’t put pressure on the surgical site.

What to Bring:

  • Medicare card, private health insurance details, or DVA card
  • Photo ID
  • Relevant X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans
  • A small overnight bag if you’re staying in the hospital (include toiletries, comfortable sleepwear, and any assistive devices like crutches if advised)
  • A book or headphones for relaxation if there are waiting periods

Arriving At The Hospital

When you arrive at the hospital, you will check in at the admissions desk, where your details will be confirmed. From there, you will be guided to the pre-operative area, where the following steps will occur:

  • Pre-Operative Preparation: You will change into a hospital gown, and a nurse will check your vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature.
  • Surgical Site Confirmation: Dr McGrath will meet with you to confirm the surgical site and address any last-minute questions.
  • Anaesthetist Consultation: Your anaesthetist will review your medical history and fasting status, explain the anaesthesia plan, and ensure you feel comfortable and informed.

In The Operating Theatre

Before your surgery, you’ll be transferred to the operating theatre.

Once in the theatre:

  • An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted to administer fluids and medications.
  • Anaesthesia will be delivered, tailored to the type of surgery and your specific needs.

Your safety is carefully monitored throughout the procedure by your anaesthetist and surgical team.

After Surgery: Recovery Room

Following the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery area. Here, nurses will monitor your vital signs and provide pain relief as needed. You may feel groggy or disoriented as the anaesthesia wears off, but this is normal.

  • Post-Surgery Checks: The nursing staff will ensure your comfort and stability.
  • Pain Management: Medications will be provided to control pain and make you as comfortable as possible.
  • Physiotherapy (if applicable): For some procedures, you may begin gentle movements or learn how to use mobility aids before being discharged.

Discharge Or Overnight Stay

Depending on the type of surgery, you may either return home the same day or stay overnight for observation and care:

  • Day Surgery: You will be discharged once you are able to eat, drink, and move safely with assistance.
  • Overnight Stay: For more complex surgeries, you’ll stay in the hospital to ensure your recovery is progressing smoothly.

Before discharge, you will receive detailed instructions for your recovery, including:

  • How to care for your wound
  • A list of prescribed medications and their dosages
  • Any activity restrictions or rehabilitation plans
  • Contact details for post-surgery concerns
